As a result of reading we can be transported to different countries, worlds and even galaxies through the pages of a book. Subsequently, as we read to our children in the womb, they can hear us and learn our voices.
However, READING is a very simple gift proven to be essential in all areas of life. From the fetus and throughout reading is extremely important.
Included below are some very informative information on why reading is important.
The Importance of Reading!
Have you ever heard of John Corcoran? He wrote “The Teacher Who Couldn’t Read”. Most people are unaware that this man is extremely intelligent. However, like many of us he graduated High School and even College, he became one of the most popular High School teachers on campus.
But, later in life he created a very successful business…, but what you may not have know is that he could not read. Meanwhile, many extremely intelligent people continue to struggle with reading, but that can be changed when properly taught. Most people can be taught to read quickly and easily.
Being able to succeed in life as John Corcoran did without being able to read makes you wonder if reading is really important. But if you read his story, you will realize how not being able to read made him feel.
He had so many lonely moments, he was constantly ashamed, living in fear that it people would realize he could not read. But, he was a very determined and intelligent despite his handicap. It did however make his life more difficult.
Why Is Reading Important?
1. The fundamentals of today’s society in order to function is Reading. It is unfortunate that many people cannot read well enough to understand the directions on their medicine bottle.
That is extremely disturbing to me, especially as family members are getting older. But think about the children they have raised, do you think they may struggle filling out an application for employment or credit. It is very possible since their parents were not the best of readers.
For instance, this can create a source of fear, anger and frustration for them, as many of the day-to-day tasks we take for granted is now a chore to them.
2. The most important vital skill to finding a good job is Reading. Whether its a well paying job or a job at a fast food joint. They all require you to read! The lack of comprehension skills and good reading will limit what a person can do in life or at least limit what they think they can do.
3. But most importantly, Reading develops the mind. It is the largest muscle we have and it needs to be exercised.
Reading helps our children sharpen their communication skills and listening skills.
Which comes in handy as an adult and can help with understanding in their jobs, marriage and even raising their own children. The written word and the understanding of it helps the brain to grow in its abilities.
The Imagination and Reading
5. Reading promotes imagination. Computers and TV are essential in our lives, they are amusement and enjoyable. Amusement comes from two words “a” [non] and “muse” [think].
Reading is not only amusement, but you can be and do anything you want right from the safety of your home, office, park or just laying by the pool. You are exercising the largest muscle you have in addition to growing and learning.
6. Have you ever read a book and you literally can see the characters in your mind walking through the field or picking up a cup? Well, it is a proven fact that Reading gets the creative juices flowing. Read to your children and ask them to draw you a picture of what they see in their minds eye.
Fundamentals of Reading
7. Children often develop a better self image if they are good readers. Not only do they feel like they can add to a conversation, but they can also feel empowered.
However, Children with poor reading skills often feel isolated, scared at school and hopes the teacher will not call on them to read out loud. Most of the time they have behavior problems and feel isolated. So they just give up, too afraid to say anything to anyone.
8. Reading skills are especially important in a phonics reading program, they improve spelling as well. Sounding out letters and words when we are students makes it easier for us to learn to spell and expands our vocabulary.
Our minds are like sponges, when we read new words it stores it for later use. Realizing that words being used in other contexts can provide a different understanding of the word and the variety of definitions in the dictionary.
9. Have you heard the saying “The pen is mightier than the sword” The fact is that many men have changed the future of their lives and countries for the better and of course the worst.
Furthermore, Ideas cannot be stopped, but rather when researched properly they can become great ideas or exposed as bad ones. This is an on going life and death struggle that we all must prepare ourselves for, and the only way to do this is by reading.
For Instance, Illiterate America issued a quote by Jonathan Kozol from “The Teacher Who Couldn’t Read,”. The three reasons why people want to read are:
1. To read the Bible,
2. To read books and newspapers, and
3. To help their children.
I think everyone can conclude that reading is a vital skill! Reading Strategies are also a part of learning to read.

Thank you Glenn – and I totally agree.
