The Very First Board Game

(5000 BC)

Did you know that board games are pre-historic? Well neither did I, Its true. Games existed prior to the spoken language. Would you like to guess what game it was…….Dice! Now you can find dice in just about every board game out there today.

The Dice consisted of 49 small carved painted stones. They were found in old Başur Höyük which dates back 5,000 years. However, in Syria and Iraq similar pieces have been located, did games originate in the Fertile Crescent? Maybe…, but this is the same part of the world where booze, breath mints and calendars were invented. What if they were so far advanced at the time that they were already planning game night. Something to think about….

In Ancient Egypt pharaohs also became lovers of the Board games. However, Senet was the most popular back in those days. Furthermore, this game was located in the First Dynasty and predynastic times. Several illustrations freatured Senet from Ancient Egyptian tombs by the time of the New Kingdom in Egypt (1550–1077 BC) and it had become a kind of talisman for the journey of the dead.

The Landlord’s Game

(1903)

One of America’s first board game designers was Lizzie Magie. She invented the “The Landlord’s Game. This game board was designed with a square track, properties all around that players could buy. Is this starting to sound familiar to you? It had two utilities, a corner called “Labor Upon Mother Earth Produces Wages”, four railroads and a jail. the “Labor Upon Mother Earth Produces Wages,” corner earned players $100 everytime they passed it… Guess what it is now? You guessed it right.

Monopoly

In 1935 Magie sold her patent for The Landlords Game to Parker Brothers, which is now what we know as Monopoly. This game launched Parker Brothers to a massive success was originally rejected by them. Parker Brothers purchased patent to the game from Lizzie in 1935. This was game was a huge success, but what you didn’t know if that they originally rejected this game.

After that huge win, they went on to produce a variety of successful toys and games for the whole family.

Lizzie Magie sold her original patent of the original game for $500.
